Deep brain stimulation (DBS)

Thursday, 30 March 2017 11:36

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is commonly used to treat essential tremor, Parkinson's disease, and dystonia, a movement disorder in which the muscles contract and spasm. When medications aren’t as effective and symptoms make everyday life a challenge, DBS may help.

DBS uses a small, pacemaker-like device, placed under the skin of the chest, to send electronic signals to an area in the brain that controls movement. To give you relief, these signals block some of the brain messages that cause the movement symptoms of Parkinson’s.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a 24-hour therapy that helps control movement symptoms of Parkinson's, including tremor (shaking), slowed movement, and stiffness. The right time to talk with your doctor about DBS is now – whether you have just been diagnosed or have had Parkinson's for some time. That way, when you notice that you aren’t responding to medications the way you used to, you and your doctor will be ready to determine if DBS is right for you.

The best people to tell you about deep brain stimulation are those who have experienced it themselves.

The following stories recount the experiences of individuals who are receiving Medtronic DBS Therapy. Medtronic invited them to share their stories candidly. As you read the stories, please bear in mind that the experiences are specific to each particular person.

Patient testmonials:

“Before DBS therapy, I couldn’t tie my shoes, button my shirts or tie my own tie. After the therapy, I could do all of those things myself”  - Jerry

“I feel so much better. My energy level is improved and I’m smiling all the time. If I didn’t have DBS therapy, I believe I’d be in a nursing home” – Claire

Defining new trends in modern corneal surgery

As a ground-breaking, high-performance femtosecond laser system, the VisuMax® from ZEISS is significantly shaping the world of refractive surgery. With its outstanding cutting precision, exceptional speed and gentle treatment approach, it is the ideal platform for cutting-edge corneal surgery applications, including Flaps, Keratoplasty, Incisions for ICR and SMILE.

Small incision lenticule extraction or SMILE is redefining refractive surgery as we know it. ZEISS is at the forefront of this 3rd generation laser vision correction – with the minimally invasive, flapless ReLEx® SMILE solution.

The combination of the VisuMax and a MEL® excimer laser from ZEISS addresses wide-ranging needs of the modern refractive surgical practice. In fact, it is the only refractive platform to perform all three generations of laser vision correction: PRK/LASEK (surface ablation surgery), Femto-LASIK/LASIK (flap surgery) as well as SMILE (minimally invasive, flapless surgery).

The result is a refractive platform that merges proven corneal surgical techniques with remarkable details as the basis for excellent, highly individualized treatment outcomes – the ZEISS VisuMax.

Hemor Rite

What are haemorrhoids?

The term “haemorrhoids” (also known as hemorrhoids or piles) refers to a condition where the veins and tissue around the anus or lower rectum become swollen and inflamed. There are 2 types, internal and external.

Symptoms of internal hemorrhoids may include blood covering the stool, on toilet paper, or in the toilet bowl. However, they may also protrude through the anus outside the body, becoming irritated and painful. Symptoms of external hemorrhoids may include painful swelling or a hard lump around the anus that results when a blood clot forms.

Aldanex bridges the gap

Thursday, 14 July 2016 00:00

Incontinence is a major problem for healthcare systems worldwide. Roughly half of all institutionalized elderly patients suffer from incontinence; urinary, faecal or both. The results are all too familiar to care professionals everywhere: skin irritation, reddening, inflammation, infections and excoriations, all symptoms of Incontinence Associated Dermatitis (IAD).

The high correlation between IAD and pressure ulcers makes effective incontinence management a top priority in all care environments.

Aldanex™ has been specifically designed for the daily skin care of incontinent patients. Therefore, it represents a welcome contribution to the cost-effective prevention and treatment of moisture lesions, pressure ulcers up to category 2 and intertrigo.

Discover Kerrapro pressure reducing pads
